Memorial Dedicated on May 24

 The official dedication of the Fallen Heroes Memorial took place Friday, May 24, at the  Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell.

The cemetery is located in the northeast quadrant of the Interstate 12/ Airport Road intersection west of Slidell.

 The memorial honors all of our Fallen Heroes from Iraq and Afghanistan who have sacrificed so much for us in the Global War On Terror (GWOT).

Well over 100 people attended the memorial dedication, including many officials with the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs and Louisiana National Guard. 

The memorial was a project of the St. Tammany Veterans Foundation, Inc. (STVF). Lane Carson, President of the group, is shown at the podium.

The Northshore Honor Guard and St. Tammany Veterans Honor Guard advanced the colors at the beginning of the program, and two members of the North Cross Methodist Church Choir sang the national anthem as well as "God Bless America."

Daniele Palen, Director of the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, and Ted Krumm, the Cemetery Director of the Louisiana Dept. of Veterans Affairs, gave the welcome. Speakers included Matt Cole, Sharon and Danny McLeese, and Gina Guillory as well as other Gold Star/Blue Star Parents. Special guests included La. Dept. of Veterans Affairs Secretary Charlton Meginley and Col. Jesse Barth of the La. National Guard.

The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell

The Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs operates five veterans cemeteries located across the state, offering a variety of burial options for veterans, spouses and dependent children. Each location features spacious grounds, covered shelter for committal services, and are open Monday through Friday for interments with visitation open daily.

The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery opened in June of 2014 and has quickly become the fastest growing state veteran cemetery in Louisiana. As initial burial sites are occupied, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration provides grants to add additional burial space.

At the entrance stands the Carillon Bell Tower which was donated by AMVETS when the cemetery first opened. The bell tower is located in Memorial Circle where there is also a wall to honor the groups who donate their time and attention to the cemetery. 

A large fountain located near the committal shelter was donated by the Knights of Columbus. 

Memorial Planned For Veterans Cemetery In Slidell

 A special memorial will be built at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell to honor all of our Fallen Heroes from Iraq and Afghanistan who have sacrificed so much for us in the Global War On Terror (GWOT).

The project is being pursued by the St. Tammany Veterans Foundation, Inc. (STVF). Lane Carson, President of the group,  announced the new memorial at the Nov. 11 Veterans Day Ceremony in Covington

    The special STVF, Inc. project is named “Heroes Farewell.” 

The STVF organization has teamed up with FL&WB Architects (the same group who produced the plans for the St. Tammany Veterans Memorial Plaza at the Justice Center) to design and build an enduring Memorial to them at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery adjacent to LANG Camp Villere off Airport Road and I-12 in Slidell.

Special Memorial Announced For Slidell

     Lane Carson, President St. Tammany Veterans Foundation, Inc. (STVF),  announced at the Nov. 11 Veterans Day Ceremony in Covington that a special memorial will be built at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell.

    The special STVF, Inc. project named “Heroes Farewell” will honor all of our Fallen Heroes from Iraq and Afghanistan who have sacrificed so much for us in the Global War On Terror (GWOT) with 

      Carson said, “One hundred and forty six Louisiana Serviceman including 35 Louisiana National Guard (LANG) have been killed while serving overseas in the Global War on Terror. We owe the service members and their families, who have sacrificed so much a debt of gratitude.”

     That’s why the STVF has teamed up with FL&WB Architects (who produced the plans for the St. Tammany Veterans Memorial Plaza at the Justice Center) to design and build an enduring Memorial to them at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery adjacent to LANG Camp Villere off Airport Road and I-12 in Slidell. 

 

     The GWOT Memorial will have a “Battlefield Cross” with a plaque showing the faces and names of all our Fallen Heroes from Louisiana in the GWOT, along with US, Louisiana, and LANG flags and all five military branch insignias.  

 

      Carson encourages all citizens to remember the Fallen Heroes who gave their lives in the GWOT by sponsoring various parts of the project i.e., statue, flags, pedestal, benches, military branch insignias, or donating a plaque or engraved brick.

Veterans Day 2023

  Special ceremonies in observance of Veterans Day were held in the front of the St. Tammany Justice Center in Covington Saturday morning, November 11, 2023. Dozens of veterans from several branches of the Armed Forces attended and were honored.

Emceed by Joseph P. Untz II, commander of the American Legion Post No. 16, the event featured a number of speeches by dignitaries, patriotic songs by Emily Vennen, the presentation of the colors by the St. Tammany Veterans Honor Guard, and special remarks by representatives of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations and the American Legion Auxiliary.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the American Heritage Girls.
